There Is Still Time

If you’ve taken mifepristone, the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, and now find yourself regretting that decision, there is hope. Abortion pill reversal (APR) is a treatment protocol designed to give women an opportunity to potentially continue their pregnancies.

At Care Net of Carbon County, we offer free information and referrals for APR. You’re not alone, and support is just a call away.

What Is Abortion Pill Reversal?

To understand how APR works, it’s essential to first understand the medical abortion process. Medical abortion involves taking two drugs over a short period of time, and the first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone that helps the pregnancy grow and develop.

Abortion pill reversal focuses on counteracting the effects of mifepristone before misoprostol is taken. The process involves giving additional progesterone to help support the pregnancy and restore the hormonal balance needed to continue developing the embryo.

Progesterone can be administered orally, vaginally, or via injection, depending on the provider’s recommendation. If misoprostol has already been taken, APR is no longer an option.

A medical provider will monitor you closely and offer guidance throughout the process.

Does APR Work?

Abortion pill reversal has proven to be successful for many women. One study showed that the protocol can be effective in approximately 64 to 68 percent of cases.

Progesterone, the key hormone used in APR, has been safely prescribed for decades to help women at risk of miscarriage, and studies have not linked APR to birth defects or long-term harm.

Time is a critical factor. The sooner APR is started after taking mifepristone, the greater the chances of a successful outcome.

It tends to be most effective when started within 24 to 72 hours of taking mifepristone, though it may be successful if taken after this timeframe.
